I wish this family didn’t have to leave! I’ve known them for a few years (you might recognize them from their portraits last year ), and they are some of the loveliest people around. I’m excited for them, though, as they head off on a new adventure — next month they are moving to London! The UK will be lucky to have them, but I wish Reston didn’t have to see them go.
They asked me to take their portraits in their home, to help them remember this special place in their lives. We took some formal portraits in the living room, and then I took some candid pictures in other spots around the house. I hope that when they are off gallivanting through Europe, they’ll look back fondly on these pictures and remember these years.
I lit the portraits with two Canon 580 flashes on lightstands — one with a soft box as the key light (placed by a window to mimic the direction of the natural light, and one bounced off the ceiling as the fill light and enhanced room light.
My candid and semi-posed photos were taken with natural light. I used a Canon 5D mkIV and a Fuji x-h1 with a variety of lenses, primarily the Canon 16-35mm f2.8 and the Fuji 56mm f1.2.
I love photographing families in their homes, because there is nothing truer and more memorable than living rooms, kids’ bedrooms, and family times in the kitchen.
Audrey was excited to show me her camera! She took pictures of me while I photographed her. Love.
Bon voyage, Campbells! I’ll miss you! I’ll see you on the other side of the pond.
