Our kitchen has a cabinet!
      February 15, 2008

Our dusty void is starting to look like a kitchen! The entire project was originally planned to be completed on Friday, after two work weeks. As I’ve learned from many hours of HGTV, these projects never finish on schedule, and ours is no exception. It’s at least a week delayed, if not more. But at least the contractors started to install cabinets Friday! They also finished the wiring and lights. This weekend Mike and I bought out Lowe’s and Home Depot with new appliances and other widgets. It’s starting to be fun!

This picture makes me laugh. Randy pokes through the wrong hole while trying to help Michael in the attic.

Michael was in the attic to wire the the can lights.

They unloaded the new cabinets into the garage, and the difference between the old and new is huge!

Aw, poor Ally dog, sitting so patiently behind her gate!

Then cabinets began to appear in the kitchen!

Our first cabinets on the wall.

Here’s the status of the kitchen at the end of the day Friday. There’s a long way to go, but at least we’re getting there!

Our new appliances! (From the Lowes website) We bought all new appliances today, in a great stainless look that is fingerprint resistant. I love them! The crazy part is that there were some great sales this weekend at Lowes, so this entire set came to a grand total of (drumroll, please)… $1500! That’s only half the price of a camera! Woohoo!

Thanks for this… your timing is perfect, because just last night Mike and I were concerned that the insulation over the lights wasn’t sufficient. I think they are going to fix it tomorrow, so it’s great to get your input!

when I studied building science as a civil engineering student, and industry guy said boxes should be built around the can lights in the ceiling space before you insulated over them and the ceiling, and we had questions on our problem sets calculating how big the boxes had to be for adequate heat dissipation, but I think finding flourescent bulbs that fit is a lot simpler, and energy efficient.

I was shocked! I had assumed stainless appliances would cost a fortune, and originally we had planned a) to keep most of our old stuff, and b) to get black instead of stainless. Then we finally went shopping and realized how much we could actually afford!

Oooh, great information, thanks. I don’t know what we’re using, but I’ll definitely investigate. Thanks for the info.

I know what you mean! We’re going through all this effort and money, and I keep thinking how old-fashioned it will all look someday. I guess there’s just no such thing as a timeless kitchen. That’s too bad, because remodeling is rough!

I’m glad you love your brand new home! Appreciate it completely while it’s still perfectly stylish! 😉

Oh wow, only $1500 for all those snazzy appliances? You guys got a phenomenal deal!!

I’m glad you like them! I can’t believe how affordable they were! We originally didn’t think we’d be able to afford stainless, but I guess we had no idea what to expect.

      Hi Janelle!

How funny that you have the same dishes! I got those in the pre-Mike years, and they are still in great condition.

That’s exactly how we were starting to feel at the end of last week. Until then, it had been a dusty mess, so when the construction zone started to look like a room, that hopeful expression showed itself much more often.

That’s what I thought! I had expected to have to pay much more than that for stainless appliances, and we hadn’t even expected to be able to afford to replace all of them with new stuff.

I can’t wait! I’ll be Rachael Ray in no time.

Isn’t that the truth! My $3000 cameras will be outdated in another 12 months or so. SIGH.

Thanks! I can’t wait to get the appliances tomorrow!

You are so right about the time and budget! Fortunately we aren’t doubling the cost, but we are spending a bit more than we hoped. It’s taking way more time than we’d hoped, though. But good quality is worth the wait.

are you using flourescent bulbs for the can lights? much safer, since other bulbs can over heating/cause a fire if they don’t take steps, ie, if you insulate right over the lights and trap the heat.

what a difference in the old and new cabinets! my mom has the old ones in her kitchen and it’s just so 90s (possibly even 80s?) funny how styles change. i’m curious what i’ll think of my now new kitchen in 15 years or so. will it be DATED? granite? what’s that? stainless appliances? and what will the kitchen of the future look like?

you all will definitely enjoy that. we love our new kitchen/home. the kitchen is definitely one of the favorite rooms!

can’t wait to see it all done! and ally will be so stoked too! hee.

nice! I have massive appliance envy!

it looks gorgeous so far!! i’m so jealous!!

(p.s. that mug mike is holding? we have that whole set of dishes…well almost the whole set anyway!!)

      I love the photo of
Mike with the mug in the empty kitchen, it seems so hopeful!

$1500 for all that seems like an IMMENSE deal to me. i want a lovely kitchen!! can’t wait to see it finished.

A brand new kitchen to cook, how much fun will that be?

Those are some sexy new appliances! (and you’ll replace them looong after you replace the camera!)

      Whoa, I LOVE your appliances!

I seem to recall hearing on more than one occasion that when it came to remodeling anything, double the estimated cost and triple the estimated time. 🙂

Love the dining room light, too!
