Last weekend, I had one of my favorite kinds of photo sessions — a casual family outing with a mixture of posed portraits, relaxed candids, and plenty of silliness.

Family portraits don’t need to be formal, once-a-year-for-holiday-cards events. I urge everyone to also consider professional photography of the occasional casual outing or typical day. It’s important to have formal family portraits taken once in a while, but the simple moments also deserve to be beautifully documented. These are the days that make the stories of people’s lives.

On Sunday I met this family at Walker Nature Center in Reston. They came prepared for the cold, so we took a walk through the trails and enjoyed wintertime in the woods. As you’ll see, they had so much fun!

Many thanks to Erika and her family for inviting me to join them on this adventure!

I love these kinds of relaxed family sessions, which are combinations of family portraits and documentary family photography. You can see more photos like these in my galleries for Families and Kids and Documentary Family photos.
If you’d like me to tag along with your family for an outing or event, please contact me and we’ll chat about it. Let’s go out and play!
