Sarah, seeing her new baby for the first time
      February 27, 2009

On Friday my friend Sarah invited me to join her for her first ultrasound with her new baby. She is eight weeks pregnant with her second child. The baby is 1.7cm long, and that beating heart the size of a poppy seed was one of the most wonderous and beautiful things I’ve ever seen.

Sarah and her husband, Brad Walters, are fellow photographers (http://www.bradwaltersphoto.com) and good friends. I adore their one-year-old son, Isaac, and I can’t wait to meet his little brother or sister.

Here’s Isaac at the midwife’s office, with Sarah in the background.

Sarah is very good at making adorable children.

This was the look on Sarah’s face when she first saw her new baby.

There’s the baby, at the moment when the midwife pointed out the tiny heartbeat.

      Sarah’s reaction to the heartbeat.

      I cried. So amazing.

Then the midwife got a tape measure to show us just how tiny 1.7cm really is.

Great pictures. I came across these just before my photshoot and decided to have them taken in black and white and I have to say the results are as brillaint as your, soft, gentle and very personal. Like you I will treasure then for ever. Next step is setting up my own site to put them on 🙂

These are really nice photos. If you do much baby photography, get in touch with us. We have some really cute hats & sweaters and we’d love to get them into some photographers’ hands!

Incredible photographs!! Captures the excitement of the mother-to-be. Congrats to Sarahs!!!

You’re very welcome, Sarah! Thank you so much for asking me to be there with you. I can’t wait until Little One arrives!

It was such a joy to be there and see her baby!

She had her ultrasound at her midwife’s office.

What a nice thing to say! I do hope so.

      Re: OMG Charlotte…

Aw, you make me smile! You sound like a wonderful mother.

What a wonderful coincidence that your friend was just telling you about her ultrasound! I’m glad I could help you visualize it.

No one has hired me to photograph a birth, but I would absolutely love to do that someday. I don’t think it would be strange for me to be there if I didn’t know the mother well beforehand — I’d approach it like any other photo assignment, I’m sure. It would certainly be a huge honor to be asked to do something like that!

I can never thank you enough for taking these photos, Char. They mean the world to me. I am so glad you could be there not only to get these great shots, but also as a wonderful, supportive friend. It is so great having something to start Little One’s baby book as well!

      Your the best,
      Sarah

This is such a great idea! I’d love to be there for a moment like this too!

Was that at a doctors office or one of those Ultrasound places in the mall? The places in the mall are so much less expensive than the doctors office!

      Wow.

She is going to cherish these forever.

      OMG Charlotte…

STOP! You are slaying me here! I am 47 years old, with a 25 year old son – and now I am all misty eyed and wanting to do it – all – over – again.

I have a friend who is 8 weeks!! She was telling me about seeing the heartbeat the size of a poppyseed and I just couldn’t picture it – what perfect timing for these pictures.

Do you think you’ll photograph the birth when it comes time? Has anyone hired you to photograph a birth before? I’m considering hiring a photographer maaaaaybe when we have kids, but I’m not sure. Would it feel strange being present if it wasn’t someone you are good friends with beforehand? I still have a long time to think it over.

It really is amazing, and I’m glad you got to share the experience with her.
