The fall colors have arrived here in Northern Virginia, and they are just as gorgeous as any of us could have hoped.
Last weekend, I photographed this lovely family at Browns Chapel Park and Lake Newport in Reston. Their adorable two-year-old was full of energy and loved to explore the park. He reminded me so much of my own son at that age — my son sprinted along those exact same trails when he was a toddler, too.
I love working with energetic, bright, enthusiastic kids! And I know how to keep an active toddler happy for photos, because my own kids have given me tons of practice. The secret is to let the child lead the way. During photo sessions, I don’t force kids to do anything they don’t enjoy. Instead, I ask what they want to do, and then I join in their fun. As long as the child is happy and the parents are flexible, I can get beautiful photos.
Dancing like a monkey behind my camera helps, too, ha!
