I’m excited that the book I worked on last year with Public Art Reston has now been published! It’s the second book in their Public Art Tour Series — the first book was a tour of the artwork displayed throughout Lake Anne Plaza in Reston, Virginia. This second book is a tour of the many pieces of public art that can be found within Reston Town Center.
I contributed several photos to the Lake Anne book, and I was thrilled to see how beautifully it all came together. The following year, the team at Public Art Reston commissioned me to take the photographs for their second tour project, and I had a ton of fun with it. They gave me a list of the 15 items of public art on display in Reston Town Center, and I set off on a scavenger hunt to find them all. Searching was even more fun than I could have imagined! I was already familiar with most of the sculptures in the Town Center, but there were a few that were new to me, even after living in this area for several years.
The most fun part of this project for me, though, was deciding how to photograph each piece of art in a way that would showcase it in a beautiful and interesting way. Some I chose to photograph at night, some with flowers, some with direct sun, and some with city lights. I really loved this project! You can read more about it and see lots of photos here: A project about the exquisite public art of Reston Town Center
This new book takes you on a self-guided walking through Reston Town Center. If you think you’ve been to RTC so many times that you know it like the back of your hand, I challenge you to try to find all 15 art pieces! I am willing to bet that there is at least one that you’ve never seen before. (My money is on the “Trolls” hidden sculpture!)
Public Art Tour Series: Reston Town Center was written by Phoebe Avery and Anne Delaney, and designed by Abigail Fundling. Photography was by me, Charlotte Geary. The featured artwork was created by many different artists, whose stories are included in the book.
You’ll be able to buy this book at several places around town, including the Reston Museum. It’s only $6.50, so grab a copy and go exploring! This tour is a wonderful activity for the whole family. And while you’re at it, pick up a copy of the Lake Anne tour book, too.
Would you like me to take the photos for your upcoming publication or project? Please contact me and let me know how I could help you out.
