JoEllen and Bill
Washington, DC
May 9, 2006
I’ve known JoEllen and Bill for years, even before they were married, and this was the third time I’ve photographed them. It’s so fun to photograph an attractive couple, in a beautiful location, in perfect weather, right at sunset. Ahhh… it’s a good life.
JoEllen and Bill, it was great to see you! I hope you enjoy the pictures!
These running pictures make me laugh, because I asked poor JoEllen to run in those fabulous shoes. “Look! The sun is going behind the trees!” I said. “We have to hurry!” She is hardcore, I tell you. 😉
The light certainly was gorgeous that evening.
Look at those red beams of setting sunlight hitting the monument overhead. I have other versions of this photo without the guy walking in the back, but somehow I like this one best. It’s true to the nature of the DC Mall, I guess.
We made it to the Potomac in time for the sunset!
I use two cameras during important moments, like wedding ceremonies. During most portrait shoots, I use only one body, though. Portrait sessions don’t usually have priceless moments that I can’t afford to miss, so I prefer to work lighter and more comfortably for them.
One of the things that I’m concerned about is missing shots while I’m changing lens. I’m guessing that you use a couple of bodies at a time?
Well actually I don’t have a favorite lens for portrait shoots, because I try to use lots of different lenses at each shoots. I prefer to use wide apertures for narrow depth of field, though, which means I prefer my faster lenses (2.8 or wider).
Yes, I’m haunting your archives 🙂
A technical question: What’s your favorite lens to use on engagements? I’ve been using our 28-75 a lot in preparation for our upcoming wedding, but I want to make sure that I’m not limiting myself.

Re: found you on the wedding pages..
Hi there! Actually I come to the DC area often, so I’d love to take pictures of you the next time I’m in town. I’ll be there for a week in July, again around Labor Day, and again in late September. Feel free to email me at [email protected] anytime to see if we can get together! 🙂

Timers are good! They are fun, too… it feels totally silly to run to the other side of the camera and act natural. 🙂
it’s always drama with her in one form or another! hee hee. I do have a timer on my digital camera, maybe we’ll just take our own pics! ha!
I don’t know if she planned it that way, but it certainly was perfect. 🙂
I love those warm, pre-sunset colors!
I’m sorry to hear about your troubles with your mother-in-law. I wish I could be there to help you out.
These are such great pictures. They seem very happy and very much in love!
her shirt in the last picture compliments the setting sun!
very nice!
I love the gorgous orange glow you got on these. They are lovely!
They’re such a cute couple!
i so wish you could photograph me and my husband. I’m wanting close-to-sunset pics of us in Palo Duro Canyon and just can’t get my mother in law to do it-she’s so preoccupied with herself anymore, and always pissed at Aaron!
Glorious! very natural, very DC and beautiful images.
