Traci with Ellie, moments after her birth
      Colorado Springs
      January 28, 2010

Eloise Marie entered the world at 10:02 on Thursday morning, and I’m profoundly honored to have been there to witness it. Her parents are Traci and Nic Turchin, talented wedding photographers here in Colorado Springs. I was thrilled when Traci asked me to photograph the birth. It’s always a compliment to be chosen by a fellow photographer, but I was particularly touched by Traci’s request to be there for her family’s first moments with her daughter. Thank you, Traci and Nic, for trusting me to document such emotional and powerful moments. I hope these photos will always be meaningful to you and Ellie.

Traci and Nic left for the hospital around 6:30am on Thursday morning. A snowstorm with low visibility made their drive last three times longer than usual, and by the time they arrived at the hospital, Traci’s labor was well underway. Her husband Nic and his sister stayed by her side the whole time. After the baby was born, big brother Will arrived with gifts and kisses for his baby sister.

Birth is beautiful. Even during her most agonizing pain, Traci was surrounded by people who love her. I couldn’t help but cry to see such beauty. When she finally saw her baby, Traci’s joy filled the whole room. When Nic held his daughter for the first time, I had a vision of the two of them dancing at her wedding years from now. I was overwhelmed with the realization that I was documenting the first moments of that special relationship.

I love birth photography. If you or someone you know is having a baby in the Colorado Springs area, I’d love to be able to photograph your baby’s first moments. Please contact me at [email protected] if you’re interested.

Wow! what a great photos! you really did a fabulous job on these! thanks for sharing this post and keep it up!

That’s a really nice tradition to take photos of the birth… I wish it could be possible in Russia.
I was deeply touched to see the brother meeting the new born baby…It is absolutely impossible here in this country, kids under 18 may not visit new borns in hospitals…

First time visitor. Linked through Flickr.

What wonderful photographs. It’s surprising that they are some sharp and yet so candid. Or the other way round 😉

Can you share a little of the EXIF data like ISO, F stops etc.

      Really super stuff.

O Charlotte. You did an A-mazing job capturing Ellie’s birth. The slideshow was so precious, it really touched my heart. Seeing those pics instantly brought back the memories of my own children’s birth. Maybe (and that is a strong maybe) if I have another child, I will definitely get this type of photography done. I just wished I had done it for my first 3. 🙂 Job well done. Thanks for sharing….

Wow Char! What an amazing experience – the photos are fantastic too. 🙂

awww, i wish you could be in sf for mine!!!

the slideshow seriously made me cry, charlotte. you’re amazing!

Awww… i am speechless.. these pictures are wonderful.. You can really see the love, the care, the bonding, the memories that are worth keeping for the rest of your life.. congratulations for giving Ellie the chance to view mother nature’s beauty… 🙂

      wow! it’s so delicate..

OMG Charlotte. I wish you lived closer! As much as I was a little nervous that even the doctor had to be in the room (pathetically modest), these pictures brought me to tears! I relived my special moment through them! There is nothing more amazing than birth…and I can’t even explain it, but you CAPTURED it…COMPLETELY!!!! Hugs! Miss you! ;0)

Charlotte… so beautiful! This slideshow made me cry. Especially the pictures of big brother Will. Wow!

Just shared the slideshow with Ben, who then said, “So now is the part where you tell me that we can only have another baby if I promise to get Charlotte here to photograph the birth.”

      LOL

Of course, these are beautiful beautiful beautiful. I just do not ever get sick of looking at your photos. I feel like I’m getting to peek into someone else’s life for a minute. It is not like looking at photos. You have such a special talent, seriously!

I just happened to stumble upon your photos through your Flickr account, and I just wanted to say congradulations on your amazing group of photos. I have never viewed an image that brought tears to my eyes, until two minutes ago… The photo of the young boy holding the newborn child for the first time struck me as…well, beautiful. So, thank you.

Charlotte, these photos are SO beautiful. They brought tears to my eyes and I don’t even know the people. The ones of the big brother meeting his new sister are especially touching.

      just maybe…

if you and Mike decide to start your family – she can return the favor!

      Woo Hoo!

Beautiful…and I cried during the slideshow.

      Gorgeous!!!
Are they at their home? or is it a hospital?

Definitely let me know if you want to talk about whether we can make it work. I would LOVE to do it, if I can.

Oh, good point. We can chat as we get closer. Maybe we’d just pay a premium to get you on whatever flight was needed, if your were available of course. I’ve loved the idea of a birth story for a while but there are so few people I’d actually feel comfortable with having there, if that makes any sense. I love my local photographers but in some ways, they seem a little too… close?

      Oooh, Emma, that’s exciting!!

I’d love to be able to be there, but I can’t figure out how to make out-of-town births work. I’d have to be on call, which would be very difficult to time with flights. :-\

Any chance you’d want to fly out to Portland sometime in early spring? No announcement yet but hopes that there will be sometime soon…

The ones with the boy, who I am assuming is either a brother or cousin, are absolutely adorable and possibly my favorites from this grouping… All in all, another great set of photographs. Thank you for sharing.

Amazing photos of the amazing moment!

Beautiful! I just watched the slideshow…and I’m sitting here crying.

I loved the photos of Big brother Will holding Eloise.

      Hi Charlotte

Those are beautiful images that you have captured.

I regret not documenting the pregnancy and birth for both our younger boys, especially seeing the pictures of the brother and his little sister and the dad with his daughter..

I would encourage any family/couple do document these events, even if the images are never to be displayed to anyone! These are memories that will be treasured, especially by mom as we all know she was kinda distracted at the time! 🙂

Charlotte- these are beyond amazing. I am in tears! You are wonderful- so thankful for your gift- these are photographs that will be treasured forever.
