Our kitchen, finally looking like a room!
February 14, 2008

We went out for lunch today, and came home to a yellow kitchen! I was so excited! This week the guys have finished the drywall, laid down the base on the floor, and today they painted the walls and ceiling. Meanwhile, Mike and I ordered our tiles for the floor and granite for the counters.

I’m losing track of the days. Wednesday, perhaps?

This is our living room, in complete disarray. The mess is killing me. Yes, we have a stove in the living room.

This morning Ally watched as Michael taped the walls for painting. You can see that they installed the baseboard for the tile floors yesterday.

Michael painted the ceiling in the dining room to make it match the kitchen. There used to be a weird seam in the ceiling between the two rooms.

Randy drilled holes in the ceiling for our new can lights. This is the new doorway that he framed and drywalled this week. The old doorway used to overlap with the refrigerator, which was not pretty.

We came home this afternoon to a painted kitchen!

And a painted dining room! I think they are going to paint the window trim tomorrow (white).

Here’s Randy, chatting with us about their handiwork.

Mike and I were excited about the progress!

Poor Ally has to stay in the basement while the guys are here. She sits at the top of the stairs all day and watches through the baby gate.

When the guys leave, Janie comes out of hiding to take a peek.

Tomorrow: they install CABINETS! Stay tuned for pictures! We finally are going to have things to look at in the kitchen!

Oh wow, what a beautiful kitchen! She must love it. What a shame that you had those mix-ups with the cabinets, though. Originally I thought that cabinet installation would take one day for us, too, but now I think it will be three days instead. Even then, the cabinets won’t be done, because the cabinet company sent two different styles of doors, so we’ll have to send back the ones that don’t match. It’s going to be a long time before our cabinets are ready!

I love the light floors in your mother’s kitchen. It’s a sad story that they remind her of your doggie, but it certainly is a beautiful color.

I’m glad the yellow color works for her! I think it will be really nice in our kitchen, but I always have doubts until I see everything pulled together. So far, so good!

Re: makes sense

Oh yes! That old kitchen could have won awards on HGTV, and not in a good way.

Architectural photography is definitely a change from people photography! I don’t think I could do it myself… people are too much fun for me to try something else. 😉

yay! yellow! my mom loves yellow. The front door is yellow. Her cupboards are sort of yellow. The colour balance is totally wrong on these photos, but maybe you can imagine: http://www.flickr.com/photos/79435154@N00/43382658/

(Incidentally, the cabinets were the only thing that went overtime in the reno. We went with Home Depot, and while the guy they sent was great, poor dude had his assistant quit the day he started and his new assistant couldn’t divide by 2, as you can see from the drawer pull behind my friend Sara in the first picture. He said the cabinets would have been a single day’s work if it weren’t for the green assistant. Anyway, Home Depot only scheduled one day, and it took forever to sort it out with them to send the guy back. He was apologetic, as he couldn’t contact us directly and we couldn’t contact him directly either.)

the floors are Canadian maple, also kind of yellow. In fact, she chose it because she wanted it to be the colour of our (now deceased) golden retriever.

The wall colour was actually the last thing that was chosen. My mom bought small cans of paint and had our painter paint it in a large swatch in the basically finished kitchen. She went through something like 3 muted greenish shades before she figured out the the right balance to pull together both the counter, the cabinets and the floor.

Glad to hear that things are going well!

Huzzah! Glad to see that you’re finally getting to do this!

I love that Ally just sits and watches! How adorable!

Renovations are so fun when they’re ALMOST DONE 🙂

Luckily my kitchen wasn’t shut down for long, just long enough to get the floors done, but I feel you, sister!

That’s good to hear. I don’t really have an opinion about recessed lighting, but that’s what the contractors recommended, so we are going ahead with it. We’re going to have hanging lights by the sink.

I’m glad you like the color! It’s called clam chowder, by Behr. We have it in the living room, too, and decided to carry it through the kitchen. It makes the house feel sunnier than it actually is.

Nope, we are having the contractors do all of it, while we hide in the basement or at coffee shops. 😉 It’s probably confusing that one of the contractors is a young man named Michael, but he’s not the same guy as my husband Mike.

How exciting! Congratulations on the new career!

Yay, progress!

My husband really loves recessed lighting – he’s so funny, because he could care less about most dorky house-stuff, but man, he loves recessed lighting.

And I love the color of the kitchen. It’s cheerful and clearly not white, but it’s not too yellow, either – there’s a fine line.

Are you saving any money by doing it some of it yourself?

This is really exciting watching this, i’m glad your posting pics!!

My first real estate check is going into the bank. My second rel estate check is going to fix my kitchen!

Oh no! I hope you can get that all fixed up soon. Even small changes here and there can make a big difference.

I can’t wait to see the finished room!

Ha! Yeah, our kitchen is totally useless right now. 😉

My kitchen suffered from 2 floods three years ago. The ceiling is still not fixed, the doors of the cabinets are off, and the three major appliances are all different colors. Oh, and two thirds of it is all fugly country looking and the other third is modern stainless. There is so little counter space that I usually end up setting up a cutting board on the stove so that I can prep a meal.

So, I would give just about anything to have a gutted kitchen that would soon be a brand new kitchen. I’d be totally willing to eat out for every meal for a month if it meant I could have a kitchen that I could actually use and enjoy being in.

That’s so exciting! They are making good progress.

i don’t. her kitchen is a wreck right now. 😉

I have so much kitchen envy right now!
