Last week I spent a colorful morning with this Reston couple and their gorgeous baby daughter. They love Lake Anne as much as I do, so it was great to photograph the three of them in this beautiful setting that means a lot to them. Their baby is six months old, and her alert, bright blue eyes just stole the show. (Until she fell asleep during the session, which was completely adorable.)
Photo tip:
Don’t be afraid of cloudy days! They can actually be ideal for portrait sessions. The light is soft and flattering and you have lots of flexibility in locations, because you don’t have to worry about harsh shadows or backlighting. Overcast days are particularly great for photographing babies with sensitive eyes, like this little blue-eyed beauty. People with light-colored eyes, especially very young people, tend to squint a lot in the sun. On a cloudy day, they can relax and feel comfortable just about anywhere.
If you are shooting outside on a cloudy day, though, it’s often best to avoid including the gray sky in the background. You’ll see that in most of these photos, I filled the frame with trees to keep the background colorful and appealing.
