Katherine and Ben
Silver Spring, Maryland
April, 2009
I met up with Katherine, Judd, and Ben in downtown Silver Spring for their family portraits. I first met them two years ago, when I took their portraits around the time of Ben’s first birthday. Now Ben is almost three and preparing to be a big brother to the baby girl they’re expecting in June.
Katherine chose Ellsworth Avenue in downtown Silver Spring for their photos. I love taking portraits in urban settings, because of the variety of backgrounds, textures, and lighting. I took all these photos with existing light only; the city provided all the shadows and diffusion that I needed.
Thanks, Katherine, Judd, and Ben! I look forward to meeting your little girl next time!
Here’s what Ben looked like two years ago…
… and here he is today!

my favorites are the one where Ben’s kinda crawling away, but turned to look at you 😀
and the third-to-last one, where he’s laughing with his parents 🙂
and oh my gosh, he was so cute as a baby… and he’s cute now, too!
O! They are so beautiful!:-)

What a precious, precious boy. His eyes are so unique, they’re mesmerising!

one day i will meet ben (and katherine!)
great pics! love the blue sweater w/ ben’s blue eyes.
my fave though is katherine on the stairs, the light looks wonderful!!!!
Some of those apprehensive pictures are really cute, in my opinion – and they also help to show how much more comfortable he got later in the session.
What an adorable little boy!
Great pics, and I love love love that both his feet are off the ground in that last one!! That seems very fitting for a nearly 3-year-old!
as the mother of the subject, I can say yes, it took about 15 minutes (and many M&M’s) for him to warm up 🙂
Man.
JEALOUS!
Very nice!

I can see why. While I haven’t yet advanced to portraits, I love taking pictures in general in both urban and rural settings for the same reasons.
And I love the fun challenge of using existing light.
These are so sweet.
I really love that last one. The way his legs are frozen and the pattern on the ground… it looks like he’s floating. Heh.
Ben is adorable!
If you have time this trip, give me a call! 🙂
very expressive, i mean these photoes convey the warm of the relations very-very good)
Cute! He looks so apprehensive in some of the pictures, but he’s completely forgotten about you in others.
