Maggie and Heather
Reston, Virginia
April, 2009
This is the fourth time that I’ve photographed Heather and Paul’s family, and I absolutely love to see their kids grow up over the years. The first time I photographed them, Heather was pregnant with Maggie, and I’ve seen her grow from a newborn to her current four and a half years. Her brother Jack is now a tall and precocious seven year old.
This time Heather had an idea that I thought was fantastic: she invited her good friend Carol and Carol’s kids to have a dual family portrait session. Carol and Heather were roommates at the University of Virginia, and now they live near each other in Reston and are the godmothers to each other’s kids. It was so much fun to photograph the friendships between the two women and all the kids.
Here’s Maggie two years ago…
… and here she is today!
Jack has grown as tall as his mother’s shoulders!
Almost-ten-year-old Sage and her mother Carol
Carol’s son Peyton
Someday soon Jack will be as tall as his dad. They’ll look back on this photo and won’t believe he used to be so small.
Jack checks to see if he’s strong enough to pick up his dad. I love the look on Paul’s face during this futile attempt.
“This is going to get ugly,” Carol said as her kids compared their heights. She was right, and her timing was hilariously perfect.
Right after this portrait session, I went out to dinner with my roommate from my own days at UVA. 🙂
I’ll get in touch with you a few weeks before I’m scheduled to arrive. Thanks! 🙂
awesome! just give me enough notice so i can make sure my kids get haircuts, heehee
Great! I come to DC all the time – I’m actually flying back there this weekend! I won’t have time for portraits during this trip, but I plan to return during the summer for some portraits. I’ll let you know when I’ll be around!
yes, i would love that! thank you! 🙂
Thanks, Brad! 🙂
That’s wonderful to hear, thank you. I’m so glad that you’ve been enjoying my photos and feeling inspired by them!
I’d love to do that! Would you like me to put you on my DC-area waiting list, so I can contact you the next time I’m in town?
Oh cool! What a great spot to go for a walk.
That’s one of my favorites of the day, thanks!
these are great!
Hi Charlotte.
I’ve been watching your blog for a about 6 months now – quietly 🙂
Just wanted to tell you, that I love your work.
There is so much to learn from how you use the light, and how relaxed and natural you make your subjects feel.
Such a great job really.
Cheers )))

I hope you guys haven’t yet started your return trip yet (or at least haven’t reached Colorado) because much of your home state has been buried by a freak spring blizzard!
(I’ve heard the worst is around Denver but Colorado Springs got some)
But I have also heard that the weather in Colorado will rapidly warm-up, so it you don’t return home before Tuesday or Wednesday, you’d hardly know there was such a huge storm.
awesome pictures! i really would love you to photograph my family sometime – i never seem to realize you’re going to be in NoVa until you’re already here though!
These are excellent. I love the great expressions you captured here.
Great photos! I love that location, too. It’s a 15 minute walk from my house as well.
wow I love that bridge shot with Sage & Peyton. Just fantastic lighting, and they just look totally at ease. Great work!
