Mike’s 32nd birthday
Breckenridge, Colorado
January 10, 2008
Look what we did today! I took Mike to Breckenridge today for his birthday, and surprised him with a dogsledding trip. It was fantastic! Those dogs were the friendliest, happiest little bundles of energy. As most of you know, Mike and I love dogs, so it was great to see these doggies so excited to be romping around in the snow. Whenever we stopped, they were eager to start running again.
We took turns driving the sled and riding as a passenger. On the uphill stretches, the passenger would get out to lighten the dogs’ load, and ride in the sleigh pulled by our guide’s skidoo. I took many of these photos and video from the bumpy skidoo, which was tricky. But it was a great ride.
Thank you so much for all the birthday wishes for Mike! We had a great day!
Here’s the super-cheesy souvenir photo that we purchased. Check out the fuzzy border. I’m posing with Granite, the alpha dog. When I sat down next to him, he greeted me with a sweet nuzzle and a kiss on the face. I wish the photographer had taken a picture of that. It was the perfect start to our ride.
While riding in the sleigh thing (not the dog sled).
When the dogs got a break, they’d roll around in the snow to cool off. Adorable.
Mike, getting ready to drive the sled. Look at that adorable white dog in the center of the photo.
There he goes! The poor guy got all the uphill stretches, and had to help the dogs and push the sled!
The downhill parts were more fun. But scary!
Then I got to ride in the passenger seat while Mike drove.
We were going pretty fast here. I can’t believe I got both of us in the frame.
Video! Cool, huh?
Here we are with the dogs and our guide, Adele.
I don’t remember this dog’s name, but he was a sweetie.
Afterward, we hit the slopes for a few runs on the skis/snowboard.
Then we drove home through South Park. Here’s a drive-by shooting of the sunset.
Happy birthday, Mike!!
Fantastic… thanks very much for the referral. π
Hi there! A couple people have mentioned that dog’s ear, but the strange thing is that I didn’t notice it while we were there. I’m not sure what was wrong with that poor doggie, but he certainly was happy!
Aw, you’re welcome! I’d definitely miss CO if we left. It’s dreamy here. π
Oh no, I’m sorry I missed this message! I was actually in DC last weekend, so I wouldn’t have been able to go anyway. I hope you guys had a great time. Happy 31st to Stu!!
That dog with the snow on his face is named Nicky, and he was completely adorable. He kept diving head-first into the snow on every break. Cute stuff.
Cool, thanks for the link, my brother has a second home up there, I wonder if he knows about it…I will pass it along.
Hey, BTW, I sent your website link to the lady that I do the coupons for over email…she may be interested in a while to have you photograph her, her husband and her daughter (who was married last summer).
Her name is Dee Jones so if you get a call from her, you know it came from me.
You guys should consider a dogsled trip, then! It’s definitely worth it!
hahaha! That’s a smart dog you had there.
You totally should! You would LOVE it!
You should! It’s a wonderful place to live. π
I love huskies, too! They would make a great Colorado dog… hmmm… maybe we need another dog. π
Yikes, that’s insanely cold! I don’t like to leave the house when it’s below freezing. π
Huskies are gorgeous. π
Our dog would love that job, too!
I’m not sure what was up with that dog’s ear, but apparently the dogs all nip at each other. Maybe that poor doggie got into a scuffle.
I didn’t know about the dogsledding until recently. I thought we’d have to go to Alaska to do something like that. But this company offers it! http://www.goodtimesadventures.com/
Looks like so much fun. Glad you had such a nice day!
Happy Birthday, again, Mike!
Long time lurker…..your Colorado pictures are beautiful and make me want to live there more and more each time. Happy Birthday to Mike!
BTW….does that greyish white dog you are hugging have stitches in his ear?? Oh the perils of not being the lead dog!

Happiest of birthdays to Mike! And I’d like to thank you for posting these pictures, they remind me so much of Colorado, and it makes the time I spend away from home so much easier to bear.
How fun!! A happy birthday to Mike.

What a neat idea for a birthday present
That is one of the most creative birthday presents I’ve ever heard of! WOW!
Mush! π

I have always wanted to go dogsledding, and I’m finally gonna get to later this month in Tahoe! SO EXCITED. I plan to post many many photos of me snuggling with the doggies. π

I loved the video! Thats a birthday gift that just makes you smile! How cool!
How awesome!! I’d love to go dogsledding. π I used to have a husky and we tried to get her to pull us around, haha. She was like, “yeah, right.” π
OH MY GOD Charlotte that is AWESOME!!!!!!! I’m adding “Go Dog Sledding” to my list of things I must do before I die! Looks like you had all KINDS of fun! π
Wow!! How fun!! Great shots …. and gorgeous dogs. Makes me want to go!!
Aww, how wonderful. These dogs look adorable. π
Happy Birthday, Mike!
Wow that is so amazing. Next time I’m back home in the winter, I definitely want to do this. Those dogs are gorgeous! haha, in the picture where you point out the middle white dog, I think the dog next to him with his face entirely covered with snow is hilarious. The combo, almost as if the white dog is saying “I really don’t know this dog!” hehe.
What a creative and wonderful birthday present!!
Aww, how wonderful. These dogs look adorable. π
That’s it … I’m moving to Colorado!
Huskies have always been my favorite breed of dog. They are all so beautiful! Looks like you all had a great time. π
That is a fantastic birthday gift! (Btw, happy birthday to Mike!)
I went dogsledding on vacation in Ely, Minnesota a few years ago over New Year’s. It was SO, SO fun, but SO, SO cold there–the warmest it got the entire week was -8, and it was down to -36 at night. I had a camera along but it was too cold to bother with (if it even would have worked at those temps) while we were out sledding. I would like to try dogsledding again in somewhat more reasonable temperatures, because I loved it, all except the part where it was -20 while I was being pulled across a frozen lake…
That looks like so much fun! I’m glad you guys had such a great day!! π
And that last picture is beautiful!
Wow. Top day all round, thanks to my amazing wife – thanks Char!
Colorado is an amazing place. Every time I get caught up in work, bills and daily stress, all we have to do is take a day and go up into the mountains, then you realize life is for living.
Plus, dogs are cool. It seems cruel to make them pull the sled, but these little guys loved it – in fact, it was hard work to *stop* them. They were happy dogs! Course, they made me push it on the uphill bits, so guess they were smarter than me too!!!
How fun!! Man, I LOVE Huskies.
So cool!!! So creative! Those dogs are adorable. :):)
The video was awesome!
wow! what a great gift to give him! that looks like sooo much fun!
my dog would adore being a sled dog. she loves loves loves to run! however, she’s a shih tzu and probably could only pull maybe her sister (a bunny named dizzy) on a sled!
btw, why is that sweet doggie’s ear all cut up? do you know? it looks painful!

Aint nothing like a souvenir photo – haha.
Looks like a fun trip. I didn’t know Breck had dog-sledding for the masses. That’s really cool.
