Michael Merrifield
      Colorado State Representative, District 18
      Downtown Colorado Springs
      April 8, 2006

I spent Saturday afternoon taking photographs for Michael Merrifield, a member of the Colorado State House of Representatives. We visited Penrose Library in downtown Colorado Springs, and I photographed as Mr. Merrifield interacted with other visitors. It was a true pleasure to photograph such a distinguished member of this community.

      More photos of Michael Merrifield

      She is three.

This fifth-grader walked up to Mr. Merrifield and introduced himself. His class is studying state government right now, so he was excited to see his state representative in the library.

      Michael’s the Sweetest

He’s just very very reserved. That’s the problem with being shy, people can mistake it for rude. It also says a lot about him. He’s not the type to walk in and command attention just because he’s an elected official. Well, that it, unless he’s taking on the republicans – then the gloves come off!

      Those are my favorites, too.

Good to know. It’s not up to me to decide what happens with these photos, but his publicity staff is probably reading this blog and should find the feedback informative.

Thanks for the feedback. Much appreciated.

      Those are great!
I absolutely adore the last two.

I didn’t notice anything at all until someone brought it up. FYI

The other pictures are good. The hand didn’t bother me until helloassholes mentioned it. What I noticed is she is leaning away from him. He is probably leaning in to make a good picture, but that’s inside of her normal social distance so she’s leaning away.

I’m sure the only thing going on is the standard, “hi, I’m your best friend” that you get from politicians. But in this case, it comes across as creepy.

You know what was happening because you were there. People seeing this in an ad weren’t there. Your friends weren’t there either and it bothered three of us. That’s one picture that should be left out of any advertising.

Some people just aren’t all that nice to people serving them and I hate to say it, but I do think that speaks to character.
I saw him at least 4 days a week, not normally in the pre-caffeinated mornings – mostly afternoons and evenings. His lady friend, Ginger, would come in as well most of the time. She’s a chatty thing.
He was never outright rude or anything, just dismissive and not what I would call “friendly”.

Yeah, I’m nice, but you don’t want to talk to me when I’m pre-coffee. 😉

Actually he’s super friendly. I’m sure it’s hard to be “on” all the time–even politicians need some pre-caffeinated downtime.

Thanks! That shot is really interesting, because Michael Merrifield organized and created a big skate park here in Manitou Springs.

Ack. There’s nothing scandalous here, I assure you. 😉

Actually a lot of these photos are just natural light. The headshot is just window light. Some of the others got tricky with the green florescent light, so I just pointed the flash to the ceiling, and used the built-in white bounce card on the flash for fill.

Maybe it’s just cause he hasn’t gotten his coffee yet?

This is kind of amusing. He’s a regular at the 31st and W. Colorado Starbucks…and I’ve never seen him smile. Maybe he’s just not as nice to people when he’s in the Starbucks and not posing for photos.

      that’s not nice. She’s just a kid.

I love these photos! Especially the one of him talking to the skateboarders. That’s an unusual and cool shot!

Oh hello; where is that hand?
      :O

i just don’t get how your lighting can always be so fabulous! was this all the work of the lightsphere or the pocket bouncer?

i love your shots from saturday (both sets), and the height increments in picture #3 above is great.
