Ally at Lake Granby
      Grand County, Colorado
      May 13, 2007

Last weekend Mike and I had a lot of work to do, both for our jobs and around the house. After working all morning on Saturday, we decided that we really needed a day off. We packed up the car with our tent and our dog, and by 2pm, we were on the road for Grand County on a spur of the moment camping trip. I just love the fact that we can take spontaneous trips to some of the most beautiful places in the country.

We went to one of our favorite spots, next to Lake Granby and near Grand Lake, just south of Rocky Mountain National Park. We camped at the edge of winding river and a lake, surrounded by snow-capped mountains. We slept to the sounds of a nearby waterfall. It was just what we needed.

      The view from our tent

Shortly after we arrived, a big rainstorm hit. Ally was a little freaked out about sitting in a tent during a storm.

Mike was cool with it, though.

The rain stopped, and we came out of the tent to this sight.

      The next morning

We went for a hike in the forest and through the dry lake bed.

Ally was a very mucky puppy by this point.

Ally chose the wettest path to chase a bird.

On the way home on Sunday, we were amused by our new GPS system’s display of the mountain roads!

We wore this poor girl out.

Jenny, it was Arapaho Bay campground – our favorite! It’s really popular, though, so you’ll need to call ahead to get a reservation. I recommend plot #71 or #72. πŸ™‚

Randomly found this blog entry when googling camping at lake Granby. Any chance you remember the name of this campsite? I realize this was four years ago…but it looks like exactly what we are looking for for this coming weekend. Thanks!

Oh, I love it. I just love it!

Oh, I love it. I just love it!

Wonderful! I especially like the first of the morning photo – I would love to wake to that!

      wow…

How I wish there are places here like that
where I can camp safely πŸ˜›
      Beautiful shots as always! πŸ™‚

wow! what a spectacular place and i’m not even an outdoorsy person! but i’d totally go camping there!

i like mike’s idea of what to do in the tent during a storm!

Great pictures. Looks like you had a relaxing time. I can remember camping there as a kid. But I remember a whole lot more water in the lake.

I love the one of mike by the fire with ally standing “guard” πŸ™‚

They’re all so beautiful- you’re so luck to live where such great landscapes are a short drive away!

What a fantastic weekend! Great shots as usual, and the view after the rain is very pretty.

that looks like SO MUCH fun. it makes me want to take a spontaneous camping trip! maybe we will!

Thanks for the advice!! πŸ™‚ I’ll definitely have to look into that. Maybe even for a weekday sometime, so it wouldn’t be as full.

I think Jon recognized the area from your pics, and he said he thought it was beautiful too!

It’s nice to see you guys being normal, everyday people πŸ™‚

Wow, so many of these are absolutely gorgeous! I’m definitely jealous of your location. πŸ˜‰

I highly recommend this place! We stayed at a campground called Arapaho Bay, which is on the southeast end of Lake Granby. It’s north of Winter Park, and south of Rocky Mountain National Park.

Technically the campsite isn’t open until Memorial Day, and we kinda sorta weren’t supposed to be there. That’s probably why it was so peaceful… we were the only ones there! We didn’t know it was going to closed. Apparently this campsite is so popular that it fills up regularly on summer weekends. They recommend reservations. Our favorite plot is #72. It has a gorgeous view, and it’s near the toilets and trash bins. πŸ˜‰

Ally loves to choose the wettest, muddiest, sloshiest places to roll around. She was in doggie heaven.

      The setting sunlight was spectacular!

Oh wow, that looks like SO much fun. Jon and I have been meaning to camp somewhere…but we have no idea where! This place looks incredible, though. Mind if I ask how you get there? It looks amazingly peaceful!

Love Mucky Ally photos!! What a happy doggy!!
I loved seeing your weekend get away, thanks for including us!

Looks like a great weekend and a lot of fun! πŸ™‚

      So much fun, and beautiful.

I love “The view from our tent”!! Amazing!

WOW! These are amazing, and I am so jealous!!
